Sub: Proposal for the conversion of I.S.M. University, Dhanbad to IIT Dhanbad.

Honourable Sir,

We, the students of Indian School of Mines University (I.S.M.U.), Dhanbad are writing to you on a matter that holds great significance to our prestigious institution and to the nation. It is well known that I.S.M. University is at par with the illustrious IITs in terms of quality of education imparted, research and intake of students. The admission of undergraduate students is carried out through the IIT-JEE which ensures a rich intellectual capital. Hence, it rightfully deserves the conversion to an IIT.

Sir, we would like to bring to your kind notice that I.S.M. University, Dhanbad, an autonomous institution under the aegis of the MHRD, is one of the oldest technical institutions of the nation having a legacy of pioneering work in earth science and energy sector since its inception in the year 1926. It has consistently produced leaders in these fields and has immensely helped in laying the foundation of organisations such as ONGC, CIMFR and CIL, thus playing a significant role in nation building. The alumni of the institute have been contributing greatly to the frontiers of research and have held prominent positions in major government and private organisations.

The IIT system consists of unparalleled institutions which are benchmarks for excellence in different technical sectors. Inclusion of ISMU in the IIT system would ensure that the mineral and petroleum industry of India too will be attractive to the best minds of the country as ISMU is already a pioneer in these fields. These sectors owe their foundation to I.S.M. University and are presently guided by its distinguished alumni. The university also boasts of well-established Electronics, Computer Science, Mechanical, Electrical, Basic Sciences and Management departments with experienced faculty and state of the art laboratories providing a strong research platform. As an answer to the present environmental crisis being faced by the world, ISMU has introduced a unique course in Environmental Engineering. Students graduating from this department are going to play a key role in this aspect of development of the country. It is also noteworthy that the institute has maintained a good placement record even in times of recession, something which is reflected in the fact that we were ranked 8th in National Surveys in leading magazines such as Outlook among government engineering institutions.

Converting ISMU Dhanbad to IIT will not only add to the already iconic stature of the institute but also ensure that the best minds continue to be attracted to the institution in order to pursue excellence in academics and research. Also, greater financial resources can bring about innovation, adaptability and creativity, all of which are essential for competing as a technical education institution of international standards and indisputable excellence.

With the Government of India keen to strengthen the higher education structure of the country by developing new IITs, it is our strong and well-considered opinion that a well established institution of the stature of I.S.M. University be converted to IIT Dhanbad. This will also serve the purpose of developing the educational infrastructure in the state of Jharkhand, which so far lacks an institution of the status of an IIT. And ISMU is by far the only institute at par with the IITs in Jharkhand and the whole of eastern India.

Hence, we propose that I.S.M. University Dhanbad be converted to IIT Dhanbad and be allotted resources and funds at par with the existing IITs.

Eagerly awaiting your support.

Regards,

ISMU Students Community

    suggestion:
It is a good kind of petition, but I would like to mention something points
    1. Along with the name of CIMFR, CIL add GSI also and other possible renowned names
    2. Try to show the great legacy of this university which we had in the around 1960-70 decade like
    a) being the no. 1 college of India
    b) Jawaharlal nehru himself forced the parliament to start petroleum branch here in this university
    c) At that time in front of ISM’s own entrance exam IIT entrance exam had no value
    d) And as told by the student senate and again suggested by Bhavya mam we should mention that ISM is third deemed university in india

it will good to mention about foreign company like slumberger, bhp etc coming here for placement as many of them r dream company in iit’s its self….we should also mention the harm which has been caused to ismu because of its name only…… including tat pre mature students are unaware or confuse by the fact that ismu is mining concentrated coll. etc etc….hrd department will consider the fact that money is being wasted because of vaccant seat inspite tat it is best ranked coll. in this region….

Has the letter already been forwarded n if then to whom? As the current letter is being centred for the hrd ministry, i would suggest it being forwarded to P.M Office, President Ofice, ministries like coal n mineral, petroleum and natural gas, science n tech., communication and information technology, power, environmental, commerce and industry, n to top MPs and member of rajya sabha of congress as well as bjp.

I think we can also include the fact that ism is no more only a mining college but it is a fully established technological institute.Hence is name ism is often misleading.

    suggestion:
the above letter clearly depicts ism importance in indian economy and also boon for those who are in pursuit of knowledge but it
cnt throw light WHY ISM NEED IIT STIGMA…….???? if ism had great placements, sharpened brains, environment than what effect it would have after it being turned into an iit or how could it help after it turned into an iit.
i am not against ism to iit conversation but the letter cnt reflect genuine reason of ism being an iit…..!!!

in my view the most important thing is that the name ISM is very confusing as this college have all the branches and by its name ,it seems that it is only a mining university.By converting it into an IIT ,it will benefits all other branches including earth sciences also. And best minds will be attract to it as this institutions have a royal legacy and will a IIT tag also.

i’m quite agree with Sudhamsu that as our coll. has various dept. so the name ism is misleading, this should also be included, bcz many ask how a mining coll. has elex, cse, elect. etc branch

    Dear folks,
I full-heartedly support your attempt. However, it is the question of visibility or impact of an institute on the full spectrum of the society. Still common people in south India do not recognise ISM. Naming a few individuals working in high positions in prominent institutes or companies is not sufficient. Other institutes, like BESU or JU, can also give such list. You are looking from student’s point of view. Supplying a few geologists to Coal India or petroleum engineers to oil companies is not the only factor. The number of papers published in high impact journals, international research collaborations, number of patents taken, representation in national and international bodies, involvement in projects of national or international importance, number of Bhatnagar or other national and international awardees, impact of research – all these things also matter. I suggest you to prepare such a list showing comparison with other institutes.
This shows the true impact or contribution of an institute.

i support this attempt , ismu deserves to be an iit bcoz after being an iit it may get more attention and benfits on economical base which it deserves to be..!!!!1

I think ISM has its own history as one of the comments made suggesr that ISM does not require an IIT tag. It may sound good from a fresher perspective looking for an IIT tag but whats gurantee that IITs will hold its credibility in due course in a situtaution where a no. of IITs have mushroomed recently.

Its not in the name. Haven’t you guys heard of Colardo Schoo of Mines or Royal School of Mines (the very model of ISM), Don’they have other branches?

I remember the days when one classmate of mine left ism and joined DCE in mechanical engg. Later he repented because he considered DCE had better brand value than ISM.

Name does not matter. Why do you want to ride on IIT brand tag? ISM has its own brand value. What the institute needs is to upgrade itself to a higher level interms of learning and reseach, faculty has to make an impact in terms of quality and quanity in research and publications in the world class journals. The alumni may have been doing great in the industry but its the intitute which matters.
